The rat king is a strange and ancient thing — rats found tangled together, tails knotted, moving as one creature without quite meaning to. Folklore made it ominous. Ailyse made it wear red bows.
The Rat Parade is a crown of rats, tails tied together with little red ribbons, parading along in a formation that is chaotic and organised and somehow both at once. They are not trying to be a king. They are simply going somewhere, together, looking absolutely adorable about it.
There is something freeing about taking a symbol that was meant to be unsettling and dressing it in bows. A reminder that the things we are told to find strange or dark can just as easily be charming, if you choose to see them that way.
